The Ripple Effect – Zeminar talk

I was delighted to be invited to talk on behalf of Team Hope at the most amazing youth event in Ireland, Zeminar.

I spoke about how one small action or one small idea can reach millions. I spoke about finding out who you are, taking control of how you are defined, and using that as a platform to make a difference.

“It only takes one of you to stand up against injustice to start making ripples.”

It was an immense honour. One young girl found me after the talk so we could take a selfie, I was floored. She then proceeded to tell me about how she had been inspired and hoped to make a difference and start making ripples. I hugged her and moved on, fighting back tears.

It’s events like these that plant seeds for the future. We need to keep enabling our young ones, equipping them instead of labelling them, empowering them instead of blaming them.

Podcasting: The Netflix of Radio?

A few weeks ago, a group of us tested various podcasting tools. The Marketing Lab is a group of consultants and social media whizzes in Dublin who love trying new things. Great gang, great banter.

And test we do. Its fun (and daunting at times!) to try tools, particularly if the tool is something you have never used before.

Podcasting is a new one for me – I’ve never quite “caught the bug” of listening to podcasts, nevermind broadcasting a podcast. But in the name of scie…! ahem… social media, we did it. And learnt A LOT.

How to post a link on Facebook

When you Google how to post a link on Facebook, the answer is:

  1. Type your post into the box at the top of the Page’s Timeline.
  2. Click in the top right of the box and select whether to post as yourself or one of the Pages you manage.
  3. You can tag friends or add a location. …
  4. Click Post.

That’s great, but sometimes you need a more in-depth work-through. So here we have it!

How to post a link on Facebook without pulling out your hair!

Make sure you are logged in as your page. You’ll know that you are by looking at the logo in this text box.

If you are not posting as your page, then click the small drop-down arrow on the top right-hand side and select your page.

The first step it to paste your link into the text box:

Sometimes, an image will populate in the link box, but not always. This image is the featured image on your website. If no image appears, click on the + underneath your link to add an image or multiple images. Once you select an image from your file, it should look like this. We have only selected one image for this post:

Now you can edit the title below the image. Note this text should be engaging as it is the first text most users will read when looking at your post. I changed the image again as the text was cut off and looked messy.

Now you must remove the link in the post, and add copy above your post. Typically this is a comment about the post, and must never be the same as the title text. We tried a few different titles until we were confident the post would work.

Now you can either publish your post (click publish) or schedule a post, (drop down arrow, schedule)

Twitter metric definitions

What do Twitter metrics mean?

Borrowing some definitions from this blog post by the amazing guys at Blog Paws (be sure to check them out – stellar content), hopefully this will help when you are trying to understand what the various metrics actually mean when you are looking at your Twitter dashboard.

Impressions measure the times a user is served a tweet in timeline or search results. In other words an impression is actually a calculation of how many people saw your tweet when you tweeted it on twitter. Twitter does not account for people who may have seen your tweet a while after you tweeted e.g. in your feed. So what helps increase impressions?

Favourites do not give impressions, but do help show the engagement rate. Replies add one impression to your total, just for reference. Retweets  do help increase your impressions as it gets more eyeballs on your tweet, however, if someone ‘edits’ your tweet, i.e. ads a comment to it, this actually changes the url of the tweet. Thus, all engagement and impressions gained as a result of the tweet are not measured on your channel. This is helpful to know if you are retweeting content, and want the ‘glory’ for your own channel!

By creating fun, engaging, useful, and shareable tweets you will increase the likelihood of someone retweeting your tweet.

Engagements are the total number of times a user interacts with a tweet: Clicks anywhere on the Tweet, including retweets, replies, follows, favorites, links, cards, hashtags, embedded media, username, profile photo, or Tweet expansion. Just helpful to know that this really can mean any type of engagement. Take a look at this blog post to help you decide which key metrics you should be looking at.
